Descendants of William Abbott Bundick

There is much confusion regarding the wives of William Abbott Bundick. There appear to have been two different wives, Isabel MATTHEW and Sophia JAMES, but which one came first and was the mother of his son William, is still in doubt. The names are found in birth records for the children of his son William.

2. William2 BUNDICK (William Abbott1), born abt. 1743 in VA.; deceased 1810 in St. Landry Parish, LA. He married in 1778 in Mobile, AL, Mary HAY, born bef. 1755 in SC.; deceased aft. 1810 in LA., daughter of Gilbert and Eugenia (Jackson)Hay.

Notes for William Bundick:
Arrived in the Spanish Opelousas District in early 1780. Prior to his death in 1810, Bundick had acquired several large tracts of land in the Spanish Opelousas and Attakapas Districts, where he principally engaged in rather extensive cattle operations. During 1789-1793, he had holdings on the Red River in the Spanish Rapides District, where he raised tobacco.

THEY HAD BEEN MARRIED IN MOBILE BY
A PROTESTANT MINISTER ATTACHED TO THE
BRITISH ARMY ABOUT TWO YEARS BEFORE
MOBILE WAS CAPTURED BY THE SPANISH
(WHICH WAS MARCH 14, 1780) FROM WHICH
PLACE THEY HAD FIRST MOVED TO SPANISH
NEW ORLEANS. THE LAWSUIT WAS BY MARY
HAY BUNDICK AGAINST WILLIAM BUNDICK
ON THE GROUND OF HIS ABANDONMENT, IN
WHICH SHE PRAYED FOR THE PROVISIONS OF
HIS SUPPORT; AS A RESULT OF THE LAWSUIT,
HE WAS REQUIRED TO CONVEY TO HER IN 1809
A 400 ARPENT TRACT ON BAYOU CHICOT, AND
OTHER PROPERTY, IN RETURN FOR WHICH SHE
RELINQUISHED ANY FUTURE CLAIM AGAINST
HIS ESTATE.

Notes for Mary Hay:
Mary was the daughter of Gilbert Hay (Haye) and Eugenia Jackson.
Gilbert Hay was born near Williamsburg, Virginia abt. 1727.
He migrated to South Carolina by 1764 (possibly via North Carolina),he then migrated to British West Florida in 1768, from there he fled his creditors to Spanish New Orleans in early 1779.

note: British West Florida in 1768 encompassed the western tip of modern day Florida,the southernmost parts of the current states of AL,MS and the eastern portion of south Louisiana. Most of this area was then claimed by Spain in 1780.

Robert served as a private in the 16th Reg't,Thompson's Louisiana Militia in the War of 1812.
